Preconception Care
  • Advice and Help Achieving Lifestyle Changes
    • Give up smoking
    • Eliminate alcohol
    • Do not use recreational drugs
  • Weight and Nutrition
    • Creating a healthy diet and exercise regimen together
  • Screening
    • Check if you are immune to Rubella (German measles) as Rubella puts babies at risk of blindness, deafness and mental retardation. Women who are susceptible to rubella should be offered rubella vaccination before they become pregnant.
    • Check if your cervical smear (PAP test) is in date.
    • Check if you have a high blood pressure.
    • Check if you are anemic.
    • Check if you are diabetic (indicated by sugar in the urine).
    • Check if you have kidney disease (indicated by protein in the urine).
    • Check if you have a genital infection or sexually transmitted infection
    • Check your dental health.
  • Folic Acid
    • It is advisable that women who are contemplating pregnancy should take folic acid, one tablet a day (400 mcg). This will decrease the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida.
    • If you do not wish to take folic acid tablets you need to eat foods which are rich in folic acid such as spinach, green beans, fortified cornflakes and oranges.
  • Referral to Fertility specialists when needed
Pregnancy Care
  • At your first visit:
    • Ask you about your health, your partner’s health, and the health of your close family
    • Identify medical problems.
    • Discuss with you any medications you are taking.
    • Do a physical exam and a pelvic (internal) exam.
    • Weigh you.
    • Check your blood pressure.
    • Check a urine sample for infection.
    • Do some blood tests to check for blood type, anemia, and see if you have had certain infections (rubella, hepatitis, HIV, or syphilis).
    • Do a pap smear to check for cervical cancer and other tests for vaginal infections
    • Figure out your due date: an estimate of the day your baby will be born. Most babies are born within two weeks (before or after) their due date.
    • Make sure you're taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid.
  • During later prenatal visits:
    • Weigh you.
    • Check your blood pressure.
    • Measure your belly to see how the baby is growing.
    • Check your hands, feet, and face for swelling.
    • Listen for the baby’s heartbeat (after the 12th week of pregnancy).
    • Feel your abdomen to assess the baby’s position (later in pregnancy).
    • Do any tests that are needed, such as blood tests or ultrasound.
    • Ask you if you have any questions or concerns. It’s a good idea to write down your questions and bring a list with you so you don’t forget.
